National Koala Monitoring Program

CSIRO's program for determining koala numbers throughout Australia

CSIRO has been tasked by the federal government to provide an understanding of the size and status of Australia’s koala population.

Estimating koala populations is extremely complex. There are many different approaches to counting koalas, such as drones with thermal cameras, sniffer dogs, transect surveys and traditional techniques. Along with this, some areas have been intensively surveyed for decades while others have almost no data.

This site details CSIRO’s approach to fusing all of these into a national picture, while also giving individuals involved in koala monitoring up-to-date information. It includes details of all of the various data collection methods as well as scroll-based infographics outlining the approach to integrating them all.
