Coral cover on the Great Barrier Reef

Coral cover has declined greatly since 1985. In a modelled scenario with no Crown-of-Thorns Starfish outbreaks in that period, coral cover would have increased substantially.

Dissolved inorganic nitrogen on the reef

The Reef Water Quality Protection Plan shows efforts to reduce the levels of dissolved inorganic nitrogen on the reef are falling well below targets.

There is evidence to suggest that dissolved inorganic nitrogen plays a key role in outbreaks of Crown-of-Thorns starfish on the reef.
